The Indian Army’s decisive armoured edge in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
While the PT-76 and Centurion often lead the narrative, the Soviet-origin T-55 was the Indian Army’s undeniable workhorse. Acquired in the late 1960s, it shifted the technological balance, providing a decisive firepower edge.
Fielded by the 63rd Cavalry, the T-55 acted as a “sledgehammer,” breaking Pakistani strongholds at Jessore and Bogra. Its superior optics allowed crews to destroy light tanks in foggy mornings at point-blank range, while its 100 mm gun systematically cleared reinforced concrete bunkers.
In the West, the T-55 dominated night combat using active infrared night vision. During the Battle of Basantar, T-55s fitted with mine trawls physically plowed through live, 1,600 m deep minefields under heavy fire, absorbing blasts to clear lanes for the armoured advance.
The T-55’s low silhouette and sloped steel armour made it exceptionally hard to hit and resilient against incoming rounds.

In the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, not every hero fired a gun. Some carried toolboxes instead.
The indigenously built Vijayanta ARV — an Armoured Recovery Vehicle on the Vijayanta tank platform — became the lifeline of India’s armoured columns. Often called the battlefield’s “white blood cells,” these recovery vehicles kept the advance moving by rescuing damaged and stranded tanks, even under constant enemy fire.
One of the most dangerous missions was known as the “Rigger’s Run.” Recovery crews walked into active minefields carrying massive 125-kilogram steel cables. With no hydraulic anchors available, they improvised an ingenious solution: a fully operational T-55 tank would press its nose against the rear of the ARV, using its 36-ton weight as a giant anchor. This allowed the recovery vehicle’s winch to pull crippled tanks out of deep mud and back into the fight.
On the Eastern Front, the greatest enemy wasn’t always gunfire — it was water. Recovery specialists stripped down to their underwear and dived into murky rivers with almost zero visibility. Working by touch alone, they attached cables to submerged tanks trapped in air pockets, rescuing both valuable equipment and the soldiers inside.
Armed with little more than courage, technical skill, and their toolboxes, Vijayanta ARV crews worked in exposed kill zones where every recovery mission could become their last. They rarely received the recognition given to frontline tank crews, yet they formed the unseen backbone of India’s armoured operations in 1971.
Their legacy endures through a simple truth: no tank is ever truly defeated as long as “the Doctor” is on the way.
An Indian-indigenised armoured recovery vehicle based on the Vijayanta hull. The design was optimised to keep weight within 40 tons, achieving a lifting capacity of 10 tons and a pulling capacity of 25 tons. Around 200 were purchased by the Indian Army to replace the obsolete Sherman and Centurion ARVs.
